What happened was, you went to the highest position on your shock, and then went one more "click" and it dropped to the bottom. The shock adjustment positions are like "stairs". Each click up is a stiffer setting because it compresses the spring.

Each " * " represents the "steps" in the "stairs" on the outside of the shock. Each click up to the left is a stiffer setting. What you did was go to the top step, and then all the way back to the bottom. I think your screwdriver broke because on the top "step", there is a "lip" that is supposed to prevent you from going any further, but with enough pressure, it will (ask me how I know!). When you then tried to "stiffen" the setting again, you were actually on the bottom step again, and when you went two "clicks" barehanded, you went up two "steps". Unless you have a grip like a gorilla, it's hard to get it any higher barehanded. I use an allen wrench instead of a screw driver because you can get more force with less pressure. I bet that if you go back and use an allen wrench, or another screw driver, it will go two more "clicks" before you hit the "lip".
